October 2012: FAA Verification & Validation (V&V) Summit

The 8th Annual Verification & Validation (V&V) Summit was held at the Clarion Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ on October 10-11, 2012. The V&V Summit included speakers and discussions from FAA, DOD, Boeing, SAIC, Carnegie Mellon, and R4, addressing many V&V elements that are critical to moving Next Generation air transportation system (NextGen) initiatives forward. Key objectives of the summit were:
  • Foster a V&V best practices and corporate V&V philosophy
  • Explore new and practical ways to apply V&V that better support acquisitions and decision making
  • Promote V&V disciplines and culture
  • Highlight "real world" ways to incorporate V&V into organizations operations
The R4 team has been tasked with researching existing Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS), Government Off-the-Shelf (GOTS), and FAA systems to provide a network-centric linkage for a live, virtual, and constructive integrated simulation V&V environment. This environment will collect, retrieve, and exchange data between NextGen and NAS systems, virtual simulators, and constructive simulations for test and evaluation (T&E) to support a real-time System of Systems Assessment Platform (SoSAP). This environment will also support complex SoS research, systems engineering, and test across all functional areas and must be non-proprietary, scalable, flexible, and allow new and emerging systems to be integrated into the environment.

Rich Bormann, R4 Director of Engineering spoke on the system of systems initiatives in V&V.

R4's Engineering Center has created a customizable real-time notification system tailored for customer individual needs. This capability developed from work with bomb squads in the Boston area. R4 engineers and subject matter experts used the EPIC framework to create an application that provides real-time situation reporting and incident notification with the ability to notify bomb squads regionally and/nationally of an emerging event. This application, known as BRIEF - Bomb Real-time Incident Notification - gives bomb squads the ability to execute real-time information sharing and the ability to initiate and register new cases with existing systems (such as BATS). BRIEF's expert systems turns raw data into actionable intelligence, leading to better assessment and decision-making during time-critical events.
